A. Company Profile

Pharmacyclics (NASDAQ:PCYC) is a pharmaceutical company developing novel agents to improve current therapeutic approaches to cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and inflammation. The company's products are rationally designed, ring-shaped small molecules called texaphyrins. Texaphyrins selectively concentrate in diseased tissue, such as tumor cells. They disrupt the bioenergetic processes of these cells, and when combined with other treatment modalities or various forms of energy, such as chemotherapy, radiation or light, apoptosis (programmed cell death) of the diseased tissue occurs. In this manner, texaphyrins can help to reduce or eliminate the diseased tissue.

1. Motexafin gadolinium

Motexafin Gadolinium selectively targets diseased cells because they have increased rates of metabolism. Once inside the diseased cell, Motexafin Gadolinium may work to disrupt its energy production and the ability to repair itself through a multi-pronged mechanism of action. This "biolocalization" can be confirmed because the compound can be seen via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Motexafin Gadolinium accumulates in diseased cells with repeat doses and remains in the cells for days. Motexafin Gadolinium has the potential to be used as a single agent and in combination with both radiation and chemotherapy.
